Sorry- NO static stretching BEFORE workout as it weakens the muscle. Stretch after a workout to regain some flexabilty to the body. or some yoga on an off day, never before.

Very good post. It's a shame so many people get steered towards machines and cardio classes.

Good list of points Chris. I always find the best way to maximise my gym time is to go with a plan but be prepared to improvise if necessary.

Great post. Rules to live by. If only more people did this rather than grind away time "burning calories" on treadmills and ellipticals.

I totally agree with all of these points.

When I was in my late teens and twenties I used to work out a lot and would have 1.5 and 2 hour workouts and a three day split routine. I was sure that it would work great. The trouble was that I was always overtrained and nevber made good gains.

Now at 42 I train my whole body in 45 minutes and in a 2 day split I am sure I would make great gains in 45 minute workouts then. The difference is that I keep my number of sets low, go to failure on each set and work through my workout quickly.

I now feel tired but great after my workouts and am a lot healthier than I was when I was younger
