Solid article, Chris.

Whey is definitely a good way to get increased protein into the body. I believe convenience is the biggest factor in it's success, but it's outstanding nature as a protein is certainly a close second, if not an equal or greater reason. As I've said numerous times to people, just because it's an excellent protein source it should only be used in a supplemental capacity, though. Everything in moderation; a healthy mix of everything and you can't go far wrong.

I recently wrote an article which may be of interest to people here. I try to educate people on the difference between cheap whey protein which is cheap because it's poor quality, and whey which is a genuine bargain.

I go into detail about the different types of whey protein (hydrolysate, isolate and concentrate), as well as how to determine true whey content percentage, and the minumum percentage to go for.

Hopefully it'll stop people from getting ripped off and help them make better choices when purchasing whey protein.

Thanks, anyway.

Perfect! It's true that the supplements are very useful for a week person or who wants to improve the body. Mostly the body builders are using supplement to grow his/her body. A high quality whey protein powder will be loaded with Amino Acids including Leucine which has recently been touted as being extremely important in triggering muscle growth especially when consumed in high concentrations, while doing resistance training but overdosing from vitamin supplementation does occur. At high enough dosages some vitamins cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. So always take doctor's advice before using supplements.

@ Sydney: I totally agree protein supplements should only be for those who cannot eat enough solid protein. The problem is people become too reliant on protein supplements and neglect eating REAL food...

I happened to learn about a new protein supplement on a blog (Nutribody) and it’s been working great for me so far. It doesnt have sugar, soy estrogens and is completely vegetarian (should you have a restricted diet). It’s basically brown rice and pea protein! (It also doesnt have milk, which helps, since you wont feel bloated and crampy).

Too much whey has been shown to increase your chances of diabetes, so be careful!

I have always had a fear of pig supplements. So I usually stick to the Vitamin Cottage Whey Protein. These tips will really help me to evaluate my choice and make better ones in the future. Thanks!

@ DR: I myself should think a Stevia sweetener is great, I use it regularly and have nothing but good stuff to say about it...... The stuff is totally natural and has great affects on replenishing the adrenals. Alternatively try and add some raw honey or Xylitol to unflavored whey and see if that hits the sweet spot...

Chris,

What is your take on whey supplements sweetened with stevia?

PVL and AllMax both have products that use stevia instead of the chemical sweeteners

I had to go the stevia route as I found that products with the artifical stuff gave me headaches...scary stuff

@ Beth: If your in the USA then protein factory offer a very good unflavored whey in the USA. UK customers may want to look into myprotein.com. Otherwise Wholefoods in the USA offer a variety of unflavored whey at reasonable prices. I would trust the products thats wholefoods source so go ahead and pick one that looks like a good buy.....
