Coming from someone who has actually battled trouble skin...this list of tips is good, but won't always cut it. I had terrible acne as a teenager and nothing fixed it but accutane. Not every skin problem can be solved with a cleaning regime and diet. I wish it could. I am 29 and still have to go to the dermatologist once a year and MUST use 2 facial gels or else I will have blemishes. Birth control pills used to help as well, but I am anti-hormonal birth control and so I shun the pill.
I have to resist saying something snarky here, because I know you mean well, but not knowing what it is like to have problem skin, you only have so much experience.

Also, Dr. Bronners is incredibly drying and probably isn't the best for the skin on your face.

Following up on Evan's comment, Vitamin D takes 48 hours to be absorbed through your skin from the sun and can be washed off by soap and water. In order to get the benefits of sunlight, follow Evan's washing procedure, so you don't wash off the Vitamin D.

I think Dr. Mercola goes into more detail about Vitamin D absorption.

This is a great post Chris, thanks!

And particularly relevant to me as I struggled with skin issues through most of my twenties. Even now I find myself losing track of what someone is saying if they have great skin and are make-up free - I think it's one of the most confidence-inducing qualities!

My skin improved dramatically when I switched to a back to basics diet (organic foods, raw diary, plenty of meat etc), and I just wanted to point out one of my favorite fats which didn't make it onto your top 5 - grass-fed protein sources. Grass-fed meats are high in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which is an important Omega 3, and one not present in conventionally-farmed, grain-fed meats.

Just another way to up the overall O-3 quotient and boost skin quality!

I'll second the Dr. Bronner's soap! I buy the large bottles of liquid soap and dilute about one part soap to two parts water. I put this in a foaming soap dispenser to make it easier to work with, as the liquid tends to run off too easily in the shower. I have pump dispensers in all of my bathrooms and kitchen. There are different scents, with lavender (not too girly smelling) and peppermint being my favorites. Peppermint does have that cool afterburn like a Halls cough drop, so be careful on delicate skin! People use this soap for all kinds of things, including brushing their teeth. Check it out and give it a try!

When I shower, I wash only my scalp, face (out of necessity since I use plain old soap to shave with), armpits, and .. undercarriage, shall we say. The dry skin I'd been experiencing for so long on my arms and abdomen has vanished, and it's perfectly smooth and free of blemishes everywhere else.

Excellent advice! I have dry skin in my old age, lol (I'm 45) and so I have to be careful to keep my skin protected. I find that vitamin E oil is wonderful for that and reduces fine lines.

I also saw my skin completely clear after switching to my current Lacto-Paleo lifestyle. I had bad rosacea that vanished when the carbs and sugars went away!

@ Blue: Great tips, I have heard some good stuff about vitamin E oil before especially using it on things like scars and dry skin spots. A lacto-paleo lifestyle definitely helps a lot!

Great post Chris.

My ritual is pretty close to this, except I exfoliate nightly and use cocoa butter to re-hydrate afterward. By far the biggest changes in my skin came after switching to a paleo style diet, even though I was already eating "whole foods" almost exclusively.

I am a strong advocate for cod liver supplementation also. Pretty hard to beat! Good A, good D, and a huge amount of Omega-3! Reasonably inexpensive as far as supplements go.
