Simplicity is the best way to go.

By following theses simple steps a workout can be more productive...Keeping track of your workout is also a good idea...

Good music to me is the fuel...

I am all for simplicity too. For me, what also helps is to do something I enjoy. If I'm enjoying myself, then I'm more likely to get a better quality workout or even go in the first place :)

I agree with your point about creating a good playlist. Sometimes if your ipod is on shuffle you spend too much time changing the songs and lose the rhythm of your workout. Make sure your listening to music that gets you motivated and keeps you in the zone.

Awesome article Chris.

I cannot emphasize enough what you said about SIMPLICITY. I'm a huge proponent of KISS, or "keep it simple, stupid". I don't always hold to that enough in my own life, but that's my ideal.

The hard part should always be in consistency and hard work, and never in something being too complicated to figure out or that it's so intimidating you don't want to do it.

As always, AMAZING article Chris.

Cheers,

I am not much into working out at the gym but most of your tips can be applied to almost any workout. I think the most important part is to know what to do. You can waste a lot of time just deciding what you want to do this day and then having only 10-15 minutes to do it. I usually work out at home (I am into Pilates and Yoga) and I always try to plan my workout: what parts of body I want to work with, what exercises to do, how long I can exercise etc. Once I have my game plan I get the most out of every second.

I love the part about simplicity. I've only got 30-45 minutes to squeeze my workout in. I've got to be simple and efficient.

I suspect that's how most people are, too. We all have busy lives.

Good points but I can't stress #2 enough.

Made a huge difference in the way I workout. Instead of pacing or going to grab a drink from the water fountain for the umpteenth time I refer to my notes and I'm off to the next set/exercise.

Some great advice here.

I'm a big fan of simplifying your routine. Forget isolation exercises and focus on the bang-for-buck compound movements liks squats, deadlifts, clean and press etc...

I find 7 is the magic number for different exercies. Any more than 7 and I lose focus and my enjoyment goes down.
